There's tonnes of short adjectives you could put in there, too.

Just for the record though, you might not want to suddenly approach people in Takagamahara while randomly spouting poetry.

'Quiet' is kinda cliche, but I suppose 'soft' would be even more cliche.

It'd fit the tone of the poem just fine though.

["Pained" is just about on the mark, yes. It doesn't really sound great either way, he thinks, but at least it has the right rhythm that way...]
